Obroa-Skai--The Calm Before the Storm

It was a week since the attack on the Capital, just a week since the brutal assassination of "Governor" Frayan, and the planet was still abuzz, both with the usual conspiracy theories and with more serious speculation. Some believed that some disgruntled former government employees had done him in; others thought his wife may have caught him cheating on her and taken revenge. Some even placed the blame on (or gave credit to) now-Governor Farriman, as he had benefitted the most from the death of his former boss.

But by far most of the speculation pointed towards the planetary rebellion against Governor Frayan's dictatorial rule. The rebellion had been steadily growing ever since it erupted four years ago, and now it was almost powerful enough to contend with the planetary army. It was certainly strong enough to order a hit on the Governor, and it was the odds-on favorite for the task. The rebellion leadership hadn't yet come forward to claim credit for the deed, but many already accepted it as simple truth that they were the ones who had done it. Much of the planet was jubilant for the first day after the death of the governor, hoping that the days of tyranny were over, but Governor Farriman had proved to be just as or more dangerous to liberty as his predecessor. He had instantly formed a new cabinet upon assuming office, and the cabinet had proved to be nothing more than his inner circle of dictators--some equated them to the Imperial Moffs of old and referred to them as the "Gang of 9" (8 cabinet members and the Governor). People in the cantina cursed the Gang of 9 and the rebellion alike, for they believed the latter had inflicted the former upon them.

In a booth in the corner, a Kel Dor sat and listened to all of this conversation, and he sighed. The rebellion had done the planet a good service by getting rid of their tyrant, yet all they could do was complain. Of course, their job was not yet over, but he wished the people would just give them a chance to deal with this current situation. They were working on dealing with Governor Farriman and his Gang, but since their assassination of the last governor the new one was quite paranoid (and justifiably so) and had stepped up his guard so that it was nearly impossible to get at him at points. They would find a way, Erdo was sure, but first they had to lie low and wait for an opening. He knew that the attitudes of the people would change once that happened, but until then their lack of gratitude grated on his nerves, as well as slowed recruitment rates into the rebellion.

He heaved another long sigh and ordered a drink, using a special straw to take it in through his breath mask. A man approached him as he sipped. "Why so glum, Erdo? We'll finish the job soon enough."

Erdo glanced up and nodded. "Hello, Josh. I know we did well, but it would be nice to get some recognition for once. It was such a good thing for this planet; why can't they realize it?"

Josh smiled and put a hand on his shoulder. "Lighten up, Erdo! No one said this would be easy, and no one said we'd be thanked immediately. We'll get through this stage and win in the end."

Erdo gave him a nod and smiled beneath the mask. "I hope so, Josh. Thanks."

"No problem," Josh said with a grin as he walked away, wandering to the door and leaving the din behind. Erdo continued to sit in his booth, his thoughts wandering.
